According to the writer of The Journalist’s Resource, Farah Qureshi (2016), “The percentage of characters in popular films and primetime TV shows who are Native American ranges from zero to 0.4 percent, according to content analyses.” The Native American presence is nearly invisible in media however, when they are included it is usually as a relic of the past. Rarely are they shown as modern people but when they are shown it is usually stereotypically or inaccurately. Much of the representation focuses on issues such as addiction, poverty, or lack of education. These negative depictions have psychological consequences and it is harmful to Native people. Not only does it influence how people view Natives but it influences how Natives view themselves.
Representation matters for Native people because it has immense power to shape ideas, break down barriers, and serve as a source for inspiration. Native people have had an unheard voice for far too long. Their stories are valid and needed in the media. Now more than ever, diversity is being celebrated and appreciated. So it is critical that all voices are represented. Many Nations Studios aims to give Native people their opportunity to tell their truth and story. We are committed to a culturally responsive framework that allows us to work with tribes throughout the Pacific Northwest and beyond. We want to show the stories of power, beauty, and resiliency. We want the untold stories of Native people to come to light because their voices are valid and needed. Indigenous cultures have passed on intergenerational knowledge through oral traditions, including storytelling. Storytelling has been used to teach culture, values, customs, history, relationships, and ways of life since time immemorial. Storytelling is a large part of our cultural practices and ways of life as it guides us and is the foundation for learning. Our stories are diverse and can range from sacred stories we only tell among ourselves to funny stories that offer humor and are shared with anyone who will take the time to listen. They can revolve around social, political, or cultural lessons. Some families even have their own version of a story which captures their unique experiences. As you can see, storytelling has long been a practice of our Indigenous people and it remains an inherent part of our culture today. However, our stories represented in the media at a disproportionate rate and our roles in stories are often historical or invisible. Our stories in media are associated with addiction, poverty and a lack of formal education. However, that makes our story incomplete because it fails to capture the beauty, strength, and resiliency of our people. That is why Many Nations Studios is committed to telling your story in a culturally responsive and authentic way. We are committed to telling the stories of Indigenous people from all backgrounds. We want to tell the stories about Indigenous business, Pacific Northwest Tribes, and the untold stories. Above all we are committed to storytelling that transforms.
